Black Hills

This is one of my favorite places to travel. There is so much to see and do in the area that you could spend two weeks here. It is a great vacation for the whole family. My kids love to go to the black hills.

Custer State Park is a fantastic spot for wildlife photography and seeing the Black Hills. Take the Wildlife Loop Road for lots of bison, Deer, Rocky Mountain Sheep, prairie dogs, mountain goats, antelope, elk and wild burros. This Park has the largest publicly-owned herd of bison in the United States. Don’t miss the needles highway and Sylvan Lake. Mount Coolidge will give to a view of the entire area.  In the fall they have a bison roundup that is great.

Wind Cave National Park.

Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary.

Chapel in the Hills

Reptile Gardens is a must see. Great bird show, Snakes show, Alligator Show.

Bear Country lots of anamails in a wild setting.

Mount Rushmore at night. Also great views from the Iron Mountain Road highway. You can get a great framed view of Mount Rushmore from the many narrow tunnels (No RV’s). This road is closed in the winter. They have a night program that is great, you will need a tripod.

Black Hills Central Railroad travels highway 323 from the towns of Keystone and Hill City. You can get many shots of the train from the road.

Spearfish Canyon

Deadwood

Sturgis

Crazy Horse Memorial

Jewel Cave National Monument

Commercial Caves, Beauiful Rushmore Cave, Black Hills Caverns, Stage Barn Crystal Cave, Thunderhead underground falls

Badlands National Park, Park Loop Road, Sage Creek Rim Road, Stronghold Unit. There are Bison, prairie dogs, deer, elk, pronghorn antelope, and bighorn sheep. best time to visit this area is May through June when the weather is pleasant, this park is open all year

Triple U Ranch 35 miles northwest of Pierre. They have a very large herd of bison and they will allow people to photograh them.

Fall Colors - The leaves start to turn from about mid-September through mid-October. The best areas are in the forests of the northeast, southeast and the Black Hills.
